There are some things I miss about teaching. I usually had a 'this day in history' moment that was something cool and interesting (to me at least) on my blackboard a couple of days a week. Just to get the mind going first thing in the morning or to focus the class on something.
I forgot that today was April 12th. Why is that day so important. Well, kids, it was the first time a human being went into space - not only into space but into space in a SOVIET rocket which was akin to the Coyote strapping a huge firecracker to his butt to chase after the Roadrunner.
On April 12, 1961, Major Yuri Gagarin became the first human to travel into outer space, onboard the Soviet spacecraft Vostok 1.
We should all be taking a shot of vodka today to Soviet/World hero Yuri Gagarin who had courage beyond those of an ordinary man. It's too bad he never got the chance to walk on the Moon.
